better stories my parents are paying $40,000 a year and
they’re going to teach me how to tell stories

as the summer’s been winding down i’ve been thinking of you a
lot Molly i don’t know why but you’ve been in my dreams in my
daydreams and my nightdreams and now it’s my last night here
in Ridgefield and i’ve finally gotten up the courage to come

The grave. EDGAR.

EDGAR

i remember the first time i saw you Molly it was a few days
after Nelson told me about you it was April 13th i remember
the date because that was the day i got into NYU i was
sitting in science class half-asleep and my phone started to
vibrate in my pocket so i asked to go to the bathroom and i
got up and went to the bathroom and took the call it was my
mom she said “you’re in you’re in Edgar you’re in” and i was
so happy my future was bright and i left the bathroom and i
was on my way back to class when i saw you through a window

MOLLY appears, dancing.

EDGAR

it was the middle of the school day you were on the big lawn
in front of the building you were dancing you were wearing
boots a dress a sweater there was a cigarette in your mouth
you were dancing there was no music it was a Monday morning
and you were dancing

suddenly i felt so silly silly about my mom silly about NYU
silly about my stories i felt like a monkey in a zoo

then one day in May we met I went into a stairwell and there
you were huddled against the stairs drinking liquor out of a
brown paper bag listening to a Walkman not an iPod not a CD
player a Walkman

The stairwell. MOLLY on the floor with liquor and a Walkman. EDGAR walking by.
